You could easily pass an entire holiday here on Aqah Beach in the luxurious comfort of the InterContinental® Fujairah Resort, but you’d be missing out on some of the delightful excursions this region has to offer. A variety of fascinating sightseeing attractions await discovery around Fujairah. Picturesque landscapes, historic buildings, beautiful coral reefs and soothing hot springs are easily accessible from the resort. All along this 90km stretch of coastline, a relaxed holiday spirit prevails, but there’s still plenty for adventure-seekers to appreciate. Off-road driving in the rugged Hajjar Mountains can be arranged, as can a variety of water sports such as jet skiing, windsurfing, water skiing and scuba diving.

Al-bidyah Mosque

Eager to delve into Fujairah’s local history? Head to the oldest mosque in the United Arab Emirates. The Al-Bidyah mosque dates back to the 15th century and, although modestly sized, is impressively engineered, especially considering its antiquity. A central pillar divides the interior into four equal squares, each covered by a domed ceiling. Unlike modern mosques, there are no minarets, but there are lovely decorative arches and a mihrab (prayer niche pointing at Mecca). To venture even further back into history, visit the Islamic graveyard to the north of the mosque. You will find a massive tomb dating to the Iron Age.

Fujairah Fort

Overlooking the emirate’s main city is Fujairah Fort, the oldest fort in the UAE and – for centuries – the only stone building on the Fujairah coast. Built in 1670, the fort served both as a defensive building and a home for the ruling family. Badly damaged by a British attack in the early 20th century, it has recently been restored to its former glory. Surrounding the fort is a heritage village where you can take a trip back in time to see restored houses, exhibits about traditional Emirati life and a display of the Al Yazrah irrigation system that farmers used in their fields.

Snoopy Island

Named after the cartoon dog it resembles, Snoopy Island is a rocky outcrop only a few hundred metres from the beach’s sandy shores. The attraction is not the island itself but the coral reef surrounding it and, more specifically, the teeming marine life that calls this reef home. A spectacular spot for swimming, snorkelling or kayaking, its turquoise waters glint with hundreds of brightly colored fish. With luck, you will even spot some rays and turtles. You may also see jellyfish and an occasional reef shark, but don’t worry, they are harmless and easily avoided.
